Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (or ED) is very common, it is thought that 40% of over 40’s have it, so if you have it you are not alone, but as it is underdiagnosed and undertreated many suffer in silence. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of causes such as: medication, diabetes or low testosterone so accurate diagnosis by an endocrinologist is essential for proper treatment.
Erectile dysfunction is commonly treated by drugs such as Viagra. If drugs like Viagra don’t work then that might be a sign that there is a coexisting condition such as low testosterone which if treated may solve the problem.
Low Libido
Low libido or low sex drive is a common symptom in males and may be down to a low testosterone. Low libido can be caused by problems in the pituitary gland or testes and the testosterone levels can be dramatically low. Replacement of testosterone in this context is life changing.
More commonly as men get older the testosterone levels drop and many men notice this a loss of libido but also a loss of energy and vitality. Replacing testosterone in this context is more nuanced and depends on how low your testosterone is. Sometimes a trial of testosterone treatment is necessary to see whether that improves your symptoms.
